Buying a Used Manual Semi Truck: Inspection Checklist

A manual transmission is one of the most expensive systems to rebuild on a semi truck. Before you buy, inspect it carefully. Here's a checklist focused on the transmission — plus the questions every buyer should ask.

Transmission-Specific Checks

1. Clutch Pedal Feel

• Pedal should engage smoothly with no chatter.
• Grab point should be mid-travel — too high means a worn clutch, too low means hydraulic issues.
• No slipping under load on a test drive.

2. Shift Quality

• Every gear should engage cleanly with no grinding (synchros worn if it grinds).
• Range switch and splitter should click firmly — mushy switches mean worn linkage.
• No popping out of gear under acceleration or deceleration.

3. Fluid and Leaks

• Check the transmission fluid — it should be clean and at the right level.
• Look for leaks at the rear seal, PTO cover, and shift tower.
• Milky fluid means water intrusion — walk away.

4. Noise

• Whining in gear can mean bearing wear.
• Clunking when shifting into low or reverse suggests U-joints or spline wear.

6. Are there any active leaks?
7. Do you have a recent DOT inspection?

General Truck Checks

• Engine: compression, blow-by, oil samples.
• Rear ends and differentials: listen for whine, check fluid.
• Brakes and drums: measure lining thickness.
• Frame: inspect for cracks, welds, and rust — especially around suspension hangers.
• Tires: check for uneven wear (alignment or suspension issues).
